Highlights:

Making your own dog treats can be a fun way to reward your furry friend with a treat you created in your own kitchen.

Making dog treats ensures you know the ingredients your dog is getting are fresh, healthful, and portion-controlled.

If you’re pressed for time or simply don’t enjoy cooking, adding Yummy Combs® to your dog’s diet is an easy way to give them a treat with premium ingredients and even help keep their teeth clean.

Your dog loves treats, and there’s a good reason why. Dog treats are usually given to your pup regularly for rewards, after a walk, or as a part of their daily routine. For dogs who are fed twice daily, a little treat between meals is a welcome snack and an easy way you can bond with your dog.

When giving your dog treats, you’ve got options. Store shelves and pet supermarkets are lined with treats that not only taste great to your dog but might also provide some type of nutritional benefit. It can be tough to know which ones are best.

If you’ve decided to do some DIY dog treat-making at home, you’ll want to make sure your recipes are vet-approved and dog taste-bud accepted. Here, we’ll give you five recipes for dog treats that both you and your dog will enjoy.

5 Recipes for Homemade Dog Treats Their Vet Will Love

From top-quality ingredients to delicious ingredients, these five dog treat recipes will keep your dog and their vet happy.

1. Sweet Potato Jerky

Dogs love to chew, but many of the dog chews on the market are made from materials that aren’t safe for your dog’s teeth or digestive tract. These sweet potatochews contain only one ingredient: sweet potatoes. Your dog will love the chewy texture and the explosion of sweet potato taste, and their vet will love the healthy fiber and carbohydrate content of the sweet potatoes.

Ingredients:

  • Sweet potatoes

Process:

Start by preheating your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Snip the ends of off several sweet potatoes and cut them into ⅓-inch thick slices. Place slices side by side on parchment paper and bake for six hours, flipping once while baking. Allow the chews to cool in the oven and store them in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

2. Fruit and Veggie Biscuits

Your dog needs essential vitamins and minerals from food, just like you do. These dog biscuits pack an added punch with iron, magnesium, and calcium from spinach and vitamin C/vitamin E from apples.

Not to mention, your dog will be getting added fiber and a serving of whole grains to help with energy from the whole wheat flour. Note that you can substitute chickpea flour for whole wheat flour in this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1t olive oil
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup baby carrots
  • 1 ½ cups spinach
  • ½ apple (cored)
  • ¼ cups water

Process:

Heat your over to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine flour, oil, and eggs in a medium bowl. Set aside. In a food processor, puree carrots, spinach, apple, and water together.

Combine wet and dry ingredients until a slightly sticky dough forms. Drop dough by tablespoons onto a nonstick baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes until the treats are golden brown along the edges and bottom.

3. Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Peanut butter can be a great treat for dogs in moderation. Keep in mind that your dog typically has much lower calorie needs than you do unless you have a giant breed. That means that the typical 2-tablespoon peanut butter serving suggestion for humans is much too great for your pup.

These peanut butter dog treats give your dog just enough of the protein and healthy fat they need without overloading them with calories. Be sure to choose a natural peanut butter that does not contain sugar or artificial sweetener, like xylitol, which can be toxic to dogs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup grated zucchini
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour

Process:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Add all ingredients together in a large bowl and mix until well blended.

Knead the dough into a ball and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll dough until it is ½ inch thick. Using cookie cutters, mold the dog treats and place them onto the baking sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Let cool and refrigerate.

4. Pumpkin Dog Treats

Is your dog having digestive issues? If so, their vet may have recommended you change their diet and even add in some pumpkin.

Pumpkin puree can help dogs with diarrhea and also has an abundance of vitamins and minerals that make it a good option for treating your dog. These treats contain a blend of peanut butter and pumpkin that dogs enjoy.

This treat can be made with oat flour or whole wheat flour. When making the oat flour option, these homemade treats become gluten-free.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • 2 ½-4 cups oat flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Process:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Whisk together pumpkin, eggs, and peanut butter. Fold in the flour and cinnamon a little bit at a time until a dough forms. Roll dough onto a floured surface until it is ½ inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes.

5. Sweet Cranberry Dog Treats

For a sweet treat without overloading your dog with sugar, try adding some fruit to their recipes. This recipe contains cranberries (either frozen or fresh) along with a touch of honey for added sweetness. Your dog will love the sweetness, and their vet will love the antioxidants in the cranberries.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cranberries
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ¼ cup ground flax seed
  • ⅔ cup oats
  • ¼ cup rolled oats (aka separated)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 tablespoons water

Process:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a food processor, process ⅔ cup oatmeal and transfer to a mixing bowl. Next, puree the cranberries and add to the same bowl as the oatmeal. Add the remaining ¼ cup oats, flax seed, honey, and yogurt to the bowl and stir to combine. Add water as needed to ensure the dough is not too stiff.

Roll the dough onto your floured countertop and spread to ¼ inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 15-18 minutes and allow to cool.

These recipes don’t require a lot of culinary skill, but if you aren’t ready to make homemade dog treats, you can always offer your dog Yummy Combs to support their nutrition, protect their teeth, and make their bellies happy.

Yummy Combs

Yummy Combs treats are the ultimate in vet-approved dog snacks. Made with 45 ingredients, including 12 wellness ingredients, our treats check all the boxes of your dog’s nutritional needs. Anytime you offer your dog treats you’ll need to reduce their daily dog food intake.

Effectiveness

Unlike other dog treats, Yummy Combs does double duty, giving your dog healthy nutrients and keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Canine dental health often goes overlooked.

By age 3, nearly 80% of dogs have some level of dental disease, but only about 20% of their owners know about it. This is important because periodontal disease can lead to system-wide illness in dogs and even organ failure

Yummy Combs is the only brand of treat that has been scientifically proven to remove hardened tartar from your dog’s teeth and gum line, helping support their oral health.

Safety

If you’ve ever noticed your pup gulping or choking on a dog bone, you know the dangers of some types of treats and chews. Yummy Combs treats were designed to reduce the risk your dog has of gulping and choking on a treat.

The wide design of the honeycomb-shaped treat deters gulping, and the thin walls of the treats dissolve quickly to reduce the risk of a blockage. Our proprietary Slick’M™ ingredient helps treats pass easily through your dog’s digestive system.

For safety, taste, and efficacy, Yummy Combs is the solution both your dog and vet agree upon.

Healthy Dog Treats Made Easy

When you’re ready to test out your baking skills, your dog is a very willing taste-tester. Making homemade, preservative-free dog treats can be fun for you and delicious for your dog.

However, using Yummy Combs daily is an easy and effective way to keep your dog’s oral health on track and give them the nutrients they need to thrive.
